The Institute for Applied Noematics, or IAN, was the organization whose efforts ultimately lead to the create of new humans. Components of this endeavor included
- Extended Lifespan (EL) — the world's most durable supercomputer,
- Talos (originally named Soma) — an android body, and
- Archive — the repository of human knowledge and culture.
By the time humanity went extinct, Alexandra Drennan was the effective leader of the institute. The entire Extended Lifespan project was the brainchild of Arkady Chernyshevsky, and he became the head of the Archive in particular. Trevor Donovan was in charge of EL hardware but also spent significant time on the Archive. The Talos project was initially run by Sun Wei-Yang (who gave it the name Soma) before Drennan took over that role.
The EL facility eventually became known as simply "The Dam" to the residents of New Jerusalem.
Name
