Lateral Thinking is the fourth main puzzle in the Verdant Canyon area of The Talos Principle 2.
Puzzle elements
Although the Gravshifter is not mentioned above, this puzzle features a gravity surface, whose properties are explained in the gravshifter article.
Overview
When you enter the puzzle, you find yourself in a room with a absolutely giant gravity surface in front of you.
- The front area of the puzzle, oriented normally, has a red emitter, a red receiver, and a connector. There is a blue door that leads to the rear ground area of the puzzle.
- The rear ground area has a pressure plate for the blue door below, but has no equipment. It shares a side with the gravity surface ahead, so the player is able to jump onto the surface from here.
- The gravity surface has 4 rooms
- The major part of it is an "S" shaped area that connects to various rooms.
- As seen from the ground, the first room on the bottom left looks like a balcony with rails, and has a blue emitter in it. It is separated from the S shaped room by a blue door, that is controlled by a red receiver on the outer wall.
- The second room is on the top left corner, and has a hexahedron in it. It is separated from the S shaped room with a purple barrier.
- The third room is on the top right corner. It is blocked off by a blue door controlled by a blue receiver outside, and leads to the progress wheel.

A basic hint:

Since the name of the puzzle is Lateral Thinking, you have to get comfortable with thinking in two different orientations, the normal one, and the one on the gravity surface. When playing this puzzle, you may get a bit disoriented and think that you have no idea which way is "down". Just remember that the game only allows you two orientations: the one that is aligned to the natural gravity, and the one that is aligned to the gravity surface. Always keep track of which of these two orientations you are on, and you'll be fine.
If you're struggling to get started:
[ hint ]
The first objective is to free up the connector so you can take it inside.
If you're unable to get the connector in:
[ hint ]
Once you grab the hexahedron, you need no longer be so constrained to the gravity direction you have currently chosen.
If you're unable to satisfy both the receivers at once:
[ hint ]
See if the red receiver is even useful to you right now. Is there some angle from which you can bypass the blue door entirely?
If you solved the puzzle, and are surprised by one of the puzzle elements:
[ hint ]
You're not alone. No one has figured out what the red receiver on the vertical area is for. It is not used for solving the puzzle, perhaps it is just present for people who wish to explore that region of the puzzle.
