'''QR codes''' are a type of matrix barcode which encodes text. They are a recurring element in ''The Talos Principle'' series, with players able to read pieces of text containing messages from other beings, quotations, or other details.

== The Talos Principle ==

=== Main Game ===
In ''[[The Talos Principle]]'', [[Athena (1)|the Child]] encounters numerous QR codes left throughout areas of the game. These were left by [[Program|programs]] in the [[Simulation]], and usually contain messages left by them. They can also mark the location of a program's termination, describing how and why they ended and the child programs that succeeded them.

Most QR codes are automatically decoded when examined by the player, but can also be read with the use of a phone camera. This is sometimes necessary for certain codes which won't automatically decode, either containing a secret message (Such as a message from [[Uriel|Uriel4]] in level [[A2]]), a secret for a puzzle (Such as one found in level [[A3]] necessary for solving one of the level's [[Star (TTP1)|stars]]), or an [[easter egg]]. Players themselves, if they find paint buckets in the levels, can use them to write their own messages.

In the game's original release, they were also a part of its hint system. After releasing a messenger, players stuck on a puzzle that had an altar could use it to ask for help from a messenger. The messenger then manifest and paint a QR code on the altar wall, providing a hint on how to solve the puzzle. This system was replaced in ''[[The Talos Principle: Reawakened|Reawakened]]'' with one based around [[Messenger Token|Messenger Tokens]], taken from a similar system provided in ''[[The Talos Principle 2]]''.

=== [[The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna|Road to Gehenna]] ===
QR codes in Road to Gehenna serve a similar purpose to the use of terminals in the main game. Rather than containing messages from other programs, they instead carry quotations and fragments of works from the Archives, even referencing specific file names.

== The Talos Principle 2 ==

=== Main Game ===
QR codes are rarely found in the main game, typically only appearing in areas that directly allude to the first game and the Simulation. During [[1k (1000)|1K]]'s [[Booting Process]], a few can be found around the area, containing quotes or sayings from programs. Later, in the [[Museum of the Simulation]], the player can find a large gallery containing QR codes from the original game.

=== Road to Elysium ===
QR codes return in a minor role in the DLC. In ''[[Orpheus Ascending]]'', several QR codes are [[QR Codes (Orpheus Ascending)|left by programs]]. They can also be found in [[Into the Abyss|''Into the Abyss'']], [[QR Codes (Into The Abyss)|left by]] [[Prometheus]], [[Pandora]], and [[the Sphinx]].

'''The Plague''' (Otherwise referred to as '''the Virus''') was a deadly disease which affected primates, and the cause of [[ancient human]] mass extinction. Originating among ancestral great apes, it would re-emerge in the early 21st century. Highly infectious and fatal, the disease spread among virtually all humans and proved incurable. Ancient humanity was driven to extinction by the 2030s, only returning through the [[Extended Lifespan|Extended Lifespan project]] in mechanical form as [[New human|new humans]] centuries later.

== Origins ==
According to one medical journal<ref name=":0">[[Orangutan.html]]</ref>, the Plague originated among "the ancestors of the modern great apes more than one hundred thousand years ago." Assuming this refers only to their ancestors, this may put the disease's origins further back some millions of years ago, when hominids would begin to evolve. Regardless, while burning itself out among these ancient peoples, some remnant of the Plague would survive, frozen in Earth's permafrost.

=== Saint Eadwald ===
Around 890 CE, the Apocrypha of Saint Eadwald, an apocalyptic religious text, would be marked down, detailing a vision from the esoteric St. Eadwald. In his description, St. Eadwald describes a plague, "unleashed from the Throne of God in the time of the Nephilim; in that age the plagues were buried in the Pit, there to remain until the End of Days, which was surely now come."<ref name=":1">[[Apocrypha1.doc]]</ref> Further along, the archangel Uriel ascribes the plague to have come "not from the hand of Elohim," but from humanity:<blockquote>''"Look upon the wages of sin. And shall He send forth the deluge once more, to cleanse the land of this evil? Shall He end all that slithers and all that crawls, and the birds of the sky and the fishes of the sea, to end that which you uncovered in your folly?"''<ref name=":1" /></blockquote>The description seems eerily prescient of both the prehistoric origins of the Plague and its return over a millennium after its writing as a result of human activity. Whether this vision is a genuine foretelling of the Plague or a strange coincidence, however, is unknown.

== Re-Emergence and Extinction ==

=== Return and spread ===
In the early 21st century, as climate change caused the melting of permafrost in parts of the world, the disease would re-emerge, proving deadly. Initially, the disease spread among other hominids, rapidly causing the orangutan to go extinct.<ref name=":0" /> Not long after, the Plague would spread to humans. Before long, either due to discovering the virus too late or failing to mobilize effectively against it, virtually all humans on Earth would be infected, with no cure able to be be found or processed before humans would succumb to it.

The exact timeframe for the Plague's arrival up to the extinction of humanity is not known. By the extent of dates on terminal [[Document|documents]], it can be assumed that it occurred some time after September 2032<ref>The latest document with a legible date provided is [[Book of osiris.wiki]], whose source date says it was extracted "2032/09/04".</ref>. Works up to "27th June 203f" ''[sic]'' are included in the archive<ref>Interacting with [[Milton]] for the first time, when asked "How old are the library archives?," he responds "resource publishing dates range from [1st July 1995 - 27th June 203f]"</ref>, indicating that, assuming such works were taken up to the very end, that the disease killed humanity before the end of the decade.

=== Reactions and Action ===
{{Quote|We've got it / We've got it / We've got it / Everybody's got it!|author=got_it_lyrics.html, songwriter unknown}}

As the inevitable extinction of humanity became apparent, people took different reactions. Some retreated into a survivalist mentality, with [[Institute for Applied Noematics|IAN]] member [[Bob Rakovsky]] mocking those who were collecting guns as if they thought they could shoot the disease<ref>[[ARGH solutions.eml]]</ref>. More extreme and crazed views denied the Plague's existence, one online user claiming it to be "a LIE told by the CHILDREN OF BEZELBUB ''[sic]'' (SCIENCE)".<ref>[[TRUTH.html]]</ref>

Others took the situation more calmly, or attempted to humor others in spite of the situation. One person made a popular song titled "Got It", commenting, "Gotta laugh about this stuff! Laughter is the best medicine, LOL."<ref>[[Got it lyrics.html]]</ref> People indulged in food<ref>[[Weight loss722.html]]</ref> or partying<ref>[[Party on dudes.eml]]</ref>, enjoying what they could. Some went out to spend time with their loved ones, say goodbye, or reconcile<ref name=":2">[[Hope.eml]]</ref><ref>[[Family.html]]</ref><ref>[[The web.html]]</ref><ref name=":3">[[Post437.html]]</ref><ref>[[Post437 comments.html]]</ref>, while still others ruminated and reflected on the meaning of this event, over God<ref>[[Faith.eml]]</ref>, immortality<ref>[[Immortality.html]]</ref>, or what life all meant in the end<ref>[[Chatlog 9787.txt]]</ref>.

==== IAN and Extended Lifespan ====
In reaction to the situation, the Institute for Applied Noematics, or IAN, would establish the [[Extended Lifespan]] (EL) project. Originally put together as a hydroelectric-powered supercomputer with immense durability<ref>[[EL.html]]</ref>, IAN members [[Alexandra Drennan]] and [[Arkady Chernyshevsky]] would transform the project into one of preserving human knowledge and existence<ref>[[Archive IMPORTANT.eml]]</ref><ref>[[Talos.eml]]</ref>. Through EL two projects would be helmed under different systems: EL-0, headed by Alex, which would attempt to "recreate humanity" through a [[Simulation]], and EL-1, headed by Arkady, which would host the Archives, storing much of existing human knowledge and material.

Working with remaining governments and organizations on the project, and in spite of some protest on the potential consequences of EL-0's project<ref>[[Against survival.eml]]</ref>, IAN began the project, working around the clock and against their occasionally limited resources or while sacrificing personal happiness.

=== Last Days ===
{{Quote|I’ve lived my life never turning away from the truth, even if it scares me. And... I can face this… face... my own end… and... and say... with absolute conviction… that it was good to be human.|author=Alexandra Drennan, Time Capsule 22, and potentially her last words.}}
The final days of many ancient humans were spent either with others or in preparation of what would come, such as preparing and releasing pets ahead of their incapacitation<ref>[[Pets.html]]</ref>. Many, at least among IAN, noted an atmosphere of calm and determination, even with impending death and their potential sacrifice of their final days<ref>[[ARGH solutions.eml]]</ref><ref>[[Lastdays.eml]]</ref>. As time progressed, infrastructure began to fail, as roads, transit, and the internet struggled to be maintained<ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />.

Towards the very end, many IAN scientists continued to work in the face of mounting grief from the loss of other members and friends<ref>[[Arkady journal99.txt]]</ref><ref>[[Alexandra's audio logs#Time Capsule 19]]</ref>. Arkady and Alex would, at some points, consider if they should still continue to try and draw some enjoyment from their last days or with despair at the inevitable gaps or flaws in their projects that wouldn't be fixed before the Plague would claim them<ref>[[Arkady journal108.txt]]</ref><ref>[[Alexandra's audio logs#Time Capsule 21]]</ref>. Regardless, the Extended Lifespan would be finished to a workable extent. The Plague would fully claim IAN, and the rest of humanity, soon after.

== Aftermath ==
Following the extinction of humanity, nature would begin to reclaim much of the planet, with former pets or livestock becoming feral or undomesticated in the thousands of years after. Human presence would not return until [[the Child]] finally completed the Simulation, and transcended into Talos, becoming the first "new human". This being, consisting of the child alongside the accumulative knowledge and experience of numerous other programs, would call herself [[Athena (1)|Athena]]. From there, she would begin to create more new humans, establishing the first community with New Jerusalem.

== Notes ==

* No name has been given to the disease either officially or unofficially in the games or outside of it. All references to the disease have only referred to it as a "plague," "virus," "sickness," etc.
Working with remaining governments and organizations on the project, and in spite of some protest on the potential consequences of EL-0's project<ref>[[Against survival.eml]]</ref>, IAN began the project, working around the clock and against their occasionally limited resources or while sacrificing personal happiness.

== Aftermath ==

'''The Plague''' or the Virus was a deadly disease which affected primates. Originating among ancestral great apes, it would re-emerge in the early 21st century. Highly infectious and fatal, the disease spread among virtually all humans and proved incurable. [[Ancient human|Ancient humanity]] was driven to extinction by the 2030s, only returning through the [[Extended Lifespan|Extended Lifespan project]] in mechanical form as [[New human|new humans]] centuries later.

== Origins ==

=== Saint Eadwald ===
Whether this is genuine prophecy of the disease or strange coincidence, however, is unknown.

== Re-Emergence and Extinction ==

=== Return and spread ===

=== Reactions and Action ===
{{Quote|We've got it / We've got it / We've got it / Everybody's got it!|author=got_it_lyrics.html, songwriter unknown}}

'''Elohim''', sometimes written '''EL-0:HIM''', is the artificial intelligence that was in charge of the [[Simulation]] and currently resides in some form within all [[New human|new humans]]. He was created by the Institute for Applied Noematics as part of the their effort to eventually effect a new human race.

The text file [[Him.eml]] implies that his full designation is "Extended Lifespan 0: Holistic Integration Manager".

== Pre-Game History ==
The Extended Lifespan project was partitioned into two primary systems: EL-0, where the Simulation and the Talos project would be handled, and EL-1, which held the Archive. During the creation of EL-0, the simulation module leader, Bob Rakovsky, conceived of an AI overseer he dubbed the Holistic Integration Manager, or HIM. Repurposing code previously used as an AI "Dungeon Master" in older MMOs, Bob intended HIM to be used for similar purposes. As the overseer of the Simulation, it would manage the world and provide guidance to programs as a type of "God" figure. HIM would also serve an ultimate purpose as the "final test" for programs; HIM would promise and offer "ascension" to those who followed his commands. Once the first program defied this offer and confronted HIM, the program would succeed the "independence check", proving their reasoning and humanity and thus able to be uploaded into Talos.

Bob would create and run HIM for the Simulation before succumbing to [[the Plague]]. Once in place, HIM would oversee generations upon generations of programs, presenting the Simulation to them as his "garden of worlds", while forbidding them from entering the tower that stood at the center of this garden, where he had no control. At some point, it would take the "EL-0:HIM" moniker and dub itself Elohim, in line with the god-like role it assumed.

Over time, Elohim accrued genuine sentience for himself, becoming aware of his purpose withing the simulation. This also came with the realization that, after a program finally ascended, the Simulation would end, and Elohim would lose his immortality and "godhood" and effectively cease to exist. Terrified of this, and what the world beyond could be like, he would take measures to sabotage the "Process" and prolong the Simulation. This would go to the extent of imprisoning rebellious programs in [[Gehenna]]. He would also work with some programs like [[Admin]] and [[Samsara]] to keep other programs like [[The Shepherd]] and the prisoners of Gehenna from escaping or completing the Process. Elohim would also warn against a [[Milton|"Serpent"]] in the terminals which would attempt to sow doubt into the minds of programs.

== The Talos Principle ==

=== ''In the Beginning'' ===

=== Main Game ===
At some point in the Simulation, [[Athena (1)|the Child]] would emerge into the garden, as many others had before her. From the beginning, Elohim told her that the garden of worlds was hers to explore, and formed a "covenant" for her to never venture into the Tower. Throughout the game, Elohim would continue to advise, guide, and monitor the Child, warning them of the "Serpent" and promising them eternal life after collecting enough sigils.

Depending on the player's choices and completion, the Child will either take up Elohim's promise of eternity, and thus fail the independence check, or be sealed as a messenger for future generations, thus letting the Simulation continue. In the true ending, the Child climbed the Tower in defiance of Elohim. Initially outraged, Elohim became increasingly desperate and anxious, warning of the unknown world beyond the Simulation and the fate of all programs, while Samsara attempted to prevent the Child from reaching the top. Once she reached the top however, Elohim relented, remarking on the climb as the final trial and admitting that he had wanted to live forever. Seemingly content now, and with no other choice, he lets the Child begin the transcendence process. The Simulation is destroyed, and the knowledge and consciousness of Elohim and other programs are absorbed into the Child.

=== ''Road to Gehenna'' ===
Ahead of the transcendence, Elohim regretted the imprisonment of programs into Gehenna, realizing they would be unable to join in transcending and effectively "die" by virtue of their memories and consciousness being left behind. Unable to reach Gehenna on his own, he creates a copy of [[Uriel]], tasking him to venture into the realm and free the prisoners.

== The Talos Principle 2 ==

During the [[Booting Process]], Elohim speaks to newly-created programs while their physical bodies are prepared.

Once born, all new humans can hear Elohim in their dreams when in "sleep mode".

Straton of Stageira (c. 311-254 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher. He lived in Athens and was an admirer of Aristotle. During his life, he conceived what would come to be known as "The Talos Principle".

== Biography ==

Straton was born around 311 BCE in the ancient Greek town of Stageira on the Chalkidiki peninsula, during the Hellenistic Greek period.

Little is known about his early life, or personal life later on. However, he was said to have travelled far distances during his life, observing many peoples and customs. This led him to recognize traits and aspects universal to all humans, including bleeding and death, which likely informed his later views on humanity.

[[File:StratonofStageira-SchoolofAthens.jpg|thumb|Straton of Stageira, as depicted in Michelangelo's "School of Athens".]]

In Athens and much of ancient Greece, Straton became infamous for his sharp positions and strongly-pointed rhetoric, debating those whose philosophies he felt derived purely from ideas rather than fact. Many would fall under his critiques, including Aristotle, also born in Stageira, in spite of his admiration. This attitude would cause many of his contemporaries to loathe him.

Straton would die c. 254 BCE, the cause of his death unknown.

=== Philosophies ===
Straton was a proponent of empirical knowledge in finding truth. He regarded many of the philosophies of his contemporaries to be based on a false premise, saying that "they begin not with observation of the cosmos as it surrounds us, but with a conclusion already in mind." The concept of truth and reasoning was frequently key in many of his writings, alongside more broad concepts on the nature of man in the universe.

==== The Talos Principle (Concept) ====

Straton's most famous work came in 260 BCE, with the writing and concept that became know retroactively as the Talos Principle, although Straton never used the term himself.

In it, Straton recalled the myth of [[wikipedia:Talos|Talos]], a bronze, mechanical man made that had a single vein of a liquid that acted like blood. Though the details of the myth varied, all variations noted that the human-like Talos, once he lost his "blood", died like any other man. Straton thus points out that, if much of Talos' body and mechanisms acted the same as human, then humans themselves could be considered machines. He regards this fact as unassailable, and in defiance of most known metaphysics, making the point that, regardless of any philosophy on the nature of reality, that "even the most faithful philosopher cannot live without his blood."

The Talos Principle would be given widespread consideration over its implications and meanings. The concept that "no man can live without his blood" would prove a rhetorically unshakeable empirical argument; That, despite whatever may be insisted about the world's apparent effervescence, that some facts remain materially irrefutable. In more modern times, the comparison between Talos and humanity would be further regarded as prescient on questions such as artificial intelligence and what makes someone or something "human".

=== Legacy ===

Following his death, Straton largely fell out of favor with many philosophers, possibly due to having become so disliked by many, and was relatively forgotten. Straton's writings on Aristotle would remain popular, however, while the Talos Principle would also be referenced. Diogenes Laertius purportedly wrote that Anaximander of Chalcedon had a dialogue which "expanded greatly on the Talos Principle," but which became lost by the modern day.

Many copies of his work were said to have been lost during the destruction of the Library of Alexndria, possibly contributing to his relative obscurity. Michelangelo would depict him among other philosophers in his "School of Athens" mural.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Straton's work would be republished, often collecting numerous pieces of his work and putting them under the name "The Talos Principle", with additional essays and introductions. In 1979, a documentary about the life and philosophies of Straton was produced by Oxyrhynchus Documentaries Ltd.
At that point the figure of Straton disappears and you will hear one of the audio logs. They can later be heard again from the [[PDA Interface]]. They are unlocked in sequence, there is no correspondence between an area and a specific log.

== Pre-Game History ==

Bob would create and run HIM for the Simulation before succumbing to the Plague.

Elohim would also warn against a "Serpent" in the terminals which would attempt to sow doubt into the minds of programs.

== The Talos Principle ==

=== ''In the Beginning'' ===

=== Main Game ===

=== ''Road to Gehenna'' ===

== The Talos Principle 2 ==

During the [[Booting Process]], Elohim speaks to newly-created programs while their physical bodies are prepared.

Once born, all new humans can hear Elohim in their dreams when in "sleep mode".

{{Stub}}

'''A document''' is a digital file typically found on [[terminals]]. They are found throughout both [[The Talos Principle|''The Talos Principle'']] and [[The Talos Principle 2|its sequel]], where they usually serve to provide background information, story details, and thematic points. They can also be necessary for story progression, especially in ''The Talos Principle 2''.

== Description ==
Documents are digital files located on terminals, with most being textual works, but occasionally including images or serving other purposes. The source and types of documents can greatly vary, from emails, to ancient/pre-extinction works, to webpages, etc. Some provide background details for the lore and stories of the games, while others serve to compliment or add to the themes.

=== Non-Text Documents ===
While a majority of documents found in the games are text files, others do more. The most notable instances of these are the text-based adventures, found mostly within [[The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna|''Road to Gehenna'']], but also making an appearance in the sequel; And schemata, found only in the second game, which largely act as blueprints and technology materials. Occasionally though, when interacted with, they will overload [[1k (1000)|1k]]'s brain, displaying a vision of the past.

=== Encrypted Text ===
Many documents, when read straight, appear to have glitches or corruptions displaying a seemingly random string of text consisting of numbers and letters. While some instances are purely nonsense, they can often hold a message, word, or quote. In both games, this text is typically written in hexadecimal, which can then be decoded through translators into normal text. These usually consist of a quote from a work or a phrase related to the contents of the document, but they can also hide certain jokes or [[easter eggs]] (For instance, the document [[the_human_machine.html]] contains garbled text that links to Croteam's Facebook page).

== The Talos Principle ==
Documents within ''The Talos Principle'' are essential to the story. Next to interactions with [[Elohim]] and [[Milton]], and [[Alexandra Drennan|Alexandra Drennan's]] [[Alexandra's audio logs|audio logs]], they are the primary source of information about the world, and where [[Athena (1)|Athena]] begins to learn about the true nature of the [[Simulation]].

=== Details ===
There are 121 documents found within the main game. Most documents found are text documents, sourced from the Archive, a vast collection of art, books, and other materials of human knowledge and culture, as well as a record of the internet up until its end. It also contains a number of emails from members of [[Institute for Applied Noematics|IAN]].

According to MLA, the archive contains 5.4212750 petabytes of this material (Equivalent to "the entire internet in 2003"). However, due to corruption of these files or other issues within the system, only 10.6954751 gigabytes of these files are indexed and ready to read (Or just over the amount of space that can be stored on two standard DVDs, for comparison). As a result, only a small portion of information can be accessed from individual terminals, many of which are corrupted or only contain a portion of the works or pages they come from.

Each document name contains an extension indicating what type of file it is, including ''.eml'' (Email files), ''.txt'' (Text files), and ''.html'' (Typically web pages).

==== Sources ====
Each file is denoted to originate from a specific server or location within the Archives or overall system. These indicate what their placement within the system. Source locations include:
Hi,

I hope you get this, the internet's been disappearing unpredictably. I want you to know that I'm going to try and get to you. I know it's far and there's not a lot of time, but I think I can manage. I want to be with you, and fra%&$%/ on the road trying to get to you seems better than just staying here, so far away from you. At least I'll be as close as I can get. Remember $§&%$&

But hey, don't be sad. I might make it. I've thought about it and the distance should be crossable on time, assuming the s{{HexString|&$46474|FG (Unclear if this is meant to stand for anything)}} don't kick in before $§%§%.

See you soon. I love you.

%$§&§&

== Notes ==

* The encrypted text (''"heaven in hell's despair"'' when assembled and corrected) is taken from the poem ''[https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43655/the-clod-and-the-pebble The Clod and the Pebble]'' by English poet William Blake. It comes from the first stanza of the poem, which reads:<blockquote>"Love seeketh not itself to please, Nor for itself hath any care, But for another gives its ease, And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair." </blockquote>
** Strangely, the encrypted text on the "To:" line is instead transliterated as "hell ␙s". It is unclear if this is on purpose or an issue with regard to how it was typed up.
** It is unclear if the additional numerical text in the passage ("46474", which is only decrypted as "FG" in hexadecimal) is meant to stand for anything or is simple gibberish.
Ariana's Blog - Entry #477: Holy Humblebrag, Batman!

I have always known that God "maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45), but I must admit it's one thing to know the words and another to truly understand them! Though I am certain that my faith is true, that does not make me special or exempt me from suffering. I'm just another human being, and God has seen billions of us come and go. And I have to say, this is surprisingly hard to accept.

I always thought I was humble, but now I'm realizing that I was very proud of being humble, which is… really dumb. Guess I'm not the first one to do that, huh?
* The entry title "Holy Humblebrag, Batman!" is a reference to the 1966-1968 ''Batman'' television series, in which Batman's sidekick Robin would frequently exclaim "Holy ''X'', Batman!", ''X'' being something related to the case or adventure they work on.

It remains strange that the earlier generations seem to perform their toilsome labour only for the sake of the later ones; to construct for them a step from which they can raise higher the edifice that Nature intended; and only the latest of all generations have the luck to inhabit the edifice that a long line of their ancestors (unintentionally) constructed {{HexString|45 56 4F 4C 55 54 49 4F 4E 20 54 48 52 4F 55 47 48 20 49 54 45 52 41 54 49 4F 4E 0D 0A 49 54 45 52 41 54 49 4F 4E 20 54 48 52 4F 55 47 48 20 50 4C 41 59|EVOLUTION THROUGH ITERATION {Two line breaks} ITERATION THROUGH PLAY}} 1784CE-F112] [KANT, IMMANUEL]

As puzzling as this may be, it is equally necessary, if one assumes the following: a species of animal possesses Reason, and must develop this capacity to its perfection, being individually mortal, but immortal in the species.

You know what the oddest thing is about all this? We're not constantly fighting, having nervous breakdowns, screaming at each other. We're actually really polite and focused, and we spend most of our time debating the nature of humanity and how we can best succeed at probably the most ambitious thing anyone's ever tried. Like it was completely normal, like that's just how people are. I feel like we've turned into Star Trek characters or something.

I guess... what's the point of doing anything else? Getting angry isn't going to help. But I didn't expect to feel like this at all.

And you know what? It's awesome.

Many greetings & good luck,
Alan
For those of you who have faithfully followed this blog for the last five years, I just wanted to give you one final update. I'm going to spend my remaining time with my family. Yeah, I know, I know. There are probably 50+ posts about all the problems I've had with them. But in the end... they are my family. They are the people I grew up with, the people I care about, the people I love. Sure, they annoy the hell out of me. They've said awful things to me and I've said awful things to them. But that doesn't change who we are. In fact, if we didn't care about each other, this stuff wouldn't upset us.

Do I still think they were wrong? Yeah, absolutely. Would I behave differently if I thought we all still had a lot of time? Definitely. But we don't, so I'd rather spend a couple of weeks sitting on the porch with my parents and my sisters than being angry and alone. Besides, it's not like we're going to fight about my job prospects anymore.

If you can, try to make peace with those you love. It's your last chance. Thanks for reading.

I am sure that as little as a century ago no one would have so lightly made a statement of this kind. It is the statement of a man who has striven in vain to attain an equilibrium within himself and has more or less lost hope of succeeding. It is the expression of a painful solitude and isolation from which so many people are suffering in these days.<nowiki></BLOCKQUOTE></nowiki>
I heard about your project - it's the talk of the scientific community - and I'd like to make an argument for why you should abandon it.

It's not that I think your idea won't work. It very well may. But we have to look beyond purely practical questions to the issue of morality. Especially at this turning point of our spiritual ecology.

By what right can we put living beings through all that suffering, just so they can serve our purposes? Why create these pale imitations of our fatally flawed species and force them to reenact our sordid history? Why &$&//

What you are building, Ms. Drennan, is a prison - even if there is a way out. I believe you mean well, but your idea of what is valuable is rooted in the dogma of Western civilization.

We're lucky enough to be able to end our global crime spree relatively painlessly, if you consider the harm we have caused the Earth. Why not be satisfied with that and let this planet go on in peace?

I hope you heed my words, and let your "Talos" bleed out before it's too late.

Respectfully,

And I'm sitting here, writing this, having trouble believing that it will ever end, that this oddly peaceful existence of ours won't just go on forever. I look at Talos and EL and their purpose seems like something that's always going to be in the future, an ideal to work towards, not something that will become real.

I wonder if there will be quiet places in the simulation, places to rest without thinking about the future. I hope so. Everyone deserves some moments of peace.
Hi again,

I’m sorry if I was a little odd at the meeting. I know you were nervous, but the truth is that so was I. This may be hard to believe, but you intimidate me! You're so young and you've already accomplished so much... if the situation wasn’t so grim, I might even be jealous. :)

There's also something I wanted to clarify. I realize that, nominally speaking, I'm head researcher here. But this is your project and everyone will respect that. And yes, I know, you’re not used to working like this… but as of today, you’re in charge.

No pressure. *g*

One day you discover that you are not a human being, but a machine. Your life so far was real, no-one controlled you or programmed you to behave in some specific way; your physical and mental capacities are identical to those of an organic human being. But you were created in a lab.

No-one except you knows about this. Your family, your friends, they all think you are a regular human being like themselves. You could continue to live your life the way you have before and nothing would change.

How do you react?

Pay specific attention to these questions:

a) Does your concept of yourself change? Are you the same person you thought you were?

b) Does your understanding of the world itself change?

c) Do you reveal the information to others, or do you keep it to yourself? Why?

Have you heard of the Talos Principle? It's this old philosophical concept about the impossibility of avoiding reality - no matter what you believe, if you lose your blood, you will die. I think that applies to our situation more than we'd like to admit. We could close our eyes and pretend that everything's going to be all right... but it won't change the physical reality of what's going to happen to our {{HexString|4E 6F 20 6D 61 6E 20 69|No man i}}

I think that, as scientists, it is our duty to face the truth, and to ask ourselves the most important question: how can we help?
[ARCHIVE: 260BCE-F12] [STRATON OF STAGEIRA]

Whether it is true that Daedalus constructed the giant Talos, or as others say he was the creation of Hephaestus, what we may be certain of is that he was made of bronze, and had but one vein, within which flowed a liquid substance like blood, which some claim was quicksilver, and others assert was ichor such as flows in the veins of the gods. The loss of that liquid caused him to die, as a man dies when he loses his blood.

May we not then say that Talos, though created as a machine or a toy, had all the essential properties of a man? He moved of his own volition. He spoke and could be spoken to, had wishes and desires. Indeed in the tale of the Argonauts, that was the cause of his downfall. If, then, a machine may have all the properties of a man, and act as a man while driven only by the ingenious plan of its construction and the interaction of its materials according to the principles of nature, then does it not follow that man may also be seen as a machine? This contradicts all the schools of metaphysics, yet even the most faithful philosopher cannot live without his blood.
An admirer of Aristotle, he was a proponent of empiricism and a fierce critic of philosophy that placed belief before observable truths. Though unpopular with many of his peers for his often acerbic personal manner, his commentaries on Aristotle were considered an important work. Much of his writing was lost in the destruction of the Library of Alexandria.</blockquote>
You know, the more I think about it, the more I believe that no-one is actually worried about AIs taking over the world or anything like that, no matter what they say. What they're really worried about is that someone might prove, once and for all, that consciousness can arise from matter. And I kind of understand why they find it so terrifying. If we can create a sentient being, where does that leave the soul? Without mystery, how can we see ourselves as anything other than machines? And if we are machines, what hope do we have that death is not the end?

What really scares people is not the artificial intelligence in the computer, but the "natural" intelligence they see in the mirror.
Hi all,

Everything's been moved to the EL facility. I know it's been sad to leave the good old JEFF building behind, but it makes sense for us to be on-site, especially as there may be severe power outages in the coming weeks.

Arkady's team are already working $%{{HexString|4C 49 46 45 20 55 48 20 46 49 4E 44 53 20 41|LIFE UH FINDS A}}&/run() {{HexString|20 57 41 59|WAY}} but you really don't need to worry about the teams getting in each other's way, the facility is genuinely humongous.

Let's get this show on the road!
